The Institute of Data Governance describes data governance as a process of accountabilities, rights, and decision-making for the methods which are related to manipulation of information. These processes are executed according to the models agreed upon by everyone. These models define who can take what actions with what information, and when, under what circumstances, using what methods.

The data management association international (DAMA) describes the data governance as the control, planning, and oversight of the management of data and data related sources and use of data.

Data governance Vs. Data Management

Data governance is only a part of an overall process of data management. However, it is essential to keep in mind that it is an essential part of data management.

The practice of data governance involves describing the roles, responsibilities, and processes to ensure accountability for and ownership towards the data assets. Whereas Data Management Association International describes data governance as procedures necessary to acquire, maintain, archive, retrieve, control, enable, create, use, and purge data.

While data governance has become a popular term for data management, it is also called as Data Resource Management or Enterprise Information Management. Enterprise information management is described as an integrative process for structuring the data, defining the data and governing data set across the enterprise’s technical boundaries to improve efficiency, enable business insight, and promote transparency.

Data governance framework

It is good to think data governance as a process that supports the companies over aching data management issues. A data governance framework provides an organization with an approach to collect, store, manage and secure the data. To help you understand what data governance should cover, the Data Management Association International (DAMA) defines data management as a wheel, with data governance as a hub to which ten areas are connected:

  • Data architecture

  • Data modelling and design

  • Data storage and operations:

  • Data security

  • Data integration and interoperability

  • Documents and content

  • Reference and master data

  • Data warehousing and business intelligence (BI)

  • Metadata

  • Data quality

In Short

Data Governance is a wholesome process that enables enterprises or other relevant parties in scalable, compliant and reliable manipulation of collected data for achieving multiple aims.
